    Health Dept Leh observes International Day against Drug Abuse & Illicit Trafficking

    Leh, 22 June: Health and Family Welfare Department, Leh under the aegis of National Mental Health Program (NMHP) observed International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking in advance with the theme ‘Addressing drug challenges in health and humanitarian crises’ at the University of Ladakh, Taru Thang, Leh.
    During the occasion, Senior Superintendent of Police, Leh PD Nitya was the chief guest.
    SSP, Leh, P D Nitya emphasized the importance of such events and said that almost every country nowadays is facing the menace of drug abuse and stressed the need for awareness among all.
    She also informed about the website launched by Ladakh Police drugsfreeleh.com and requested the students to check out the website.
    During the event State Nodal Officer, National Mental Health Program, Psychiatrist, Dr Padma Angmo presented a presentation on Drug Abuse & Illicit trafficking.
    She focused on substance misuse disorders and the harmful effects of substance use. She also briefed the participants about the menace of drug abuse and how it affects the body and mind.
    Further, Dr Padma informed that the day is also marked to strengthen action as well as cooperation to achieve a society which is free of drug abuse.
    Earlier, a debate competition on the theme ‘A person addicted to drugs needs punishment, not treatment’ was held where students of the campus participated and delivered their speeches.
    Programme Coordinator, Non-Communicable Disease, Norzin Angmo hosted the whole event.
    Director, University of Ladakh, Leh Campus, Konchok Angmo; State Nodal Officer, NMHP, Psychiatrist, Dr Padma Angmo; Dean of Student Welfare, UoL, Dr Jigmet; teachers and students of Govt Middle School, Taru; Supporting staff, participants and students of the UoL were present on the event.
