KARGIL, JULY 05, 2022:Government Model Degree College Zanskar organized third day of biological tour for the science students of 5th Semester and 3rd Semester on Monday.
The third day of the tour started from Dak Bungalow Drass towards Garkhon of Aryan Valley region on July 04 to study various plant and animal species.
This was also an opportunity for the students to learn about the culture of the local people. On the way, the students and two assistant professors Dr Akbar Khan and Mr Stanzin Dadul stopped at various spots including Hambutingla (altitude of 4024 meters) and Silmo.
At Hambuting La, the students learned about plants adapted for high altitude, cold and dry climate not only to survive but spread their genes. These plants have deep roots to absorb as much water as they can and have thorny leaves to protect themselves from herbivores.
At Silmo valley, the students learned that the picture is slight different. There are certain plants that have thorns and there are juniper plants that are sacred, particularly to the Buddhist community of Ladakh and also used by Muslims of Chiktan during various occasions like weddings for incense.
It is a common notion in Ladakh that trees located at higher and inaccessible areas are strong and pleasant in their incense features. Executive Councillor Tourism and Zanskar Affairs Er Punchok Tashi facilitated the night stay of students at Tourist Dak Bungalow Garkhon.
